How do people make sense of and give meaning to cultural products?

Big movie companies do huge studies to find out what the audience want from a film. They also find out how to market their films and other promotional material

Research by:

Surveys

Polls

Focus groups

Questioners

And can also use Blogs and other social media

They also talk to people regularly: show plans and test screenings to see what there think of the movies. Find out the good ideas and the bad ones.


What to think about?

Upbringing

Lifestyle

Culture

Attitudes

Education

Emotions

Knowledge

Expectations are the main one we have to think!

  1. Joe, there are some good posts so far but still some analyses missing Please use the class notes you have to complete the following:
    - still images from a thriller with comments on suitability of setting, costume, lighting , props etc.
    - analysis of two from No Country For Old Men, Se7en or Shutter Island (only one so far)
    - analysis of the opening of your own choice of thriller film
